Understanding in Noise

Speech intelligibility in noise depends on the brains ability to automatically and quickly recognize meaningful auditory patterns within competing noise. Hearing aid technology helps in such situation by trying to reducing the amount of noise. However, these technologies work only to a certain extend and only under certain conditions. Furthermore, such technologies should not be used constantly, as they are depriving the auditory system of necessary stimulation which ultimately worsens the problems.

A much better long-term solution is auditory therapy. Auditory therapy improves hearing in general and hearing in noise by improving the brains pattern recognition ability.

For Adults

Adults typically wait 5 – 10 years from the clinical onset of a hearing loss until they seek help. During this time the brains central auditory system is deprived of crucial input to keep it working fast accurately and automatically. Hearing aids, while solving the problem of audibility do not have the necessary frequency range to fully stimulate the central auditory system.

Central auditory training can provide missing necessary stimulation to improve central auditory abilities and also improves satisfaction with hearing aids. It will be especially helpful with directional hearing and hearing in noise.
