Central (Auditory) Perception Tests

As part of hearing assessments or as requested by physicians we are able to conduct a wide variety of subjective and objective clinical audiological tests for adults and children.

Objective Tests

Objective tests are tests which are conducted without the active participation of the patient. Some of these tests are especially useful to test young children who cannot correctly respond or uncooperative adults.

Impedance Audiometry

Impedance Audiometry

This is used to checking the status and the function of the middle ear. This is very important as all future tests rely on a normally functioning middle ear. There are three main tests. The most commonly used test is check the function of the eardrum and the air pressure in middle ear cavity. Another test is the stapedius reflex test. This test measures the contraction of the stapedius muscle in the middle ear. This muscle automatically contracts in the presence of loud sounds to protect the inner ear.

The test is conducted by sealing off the earcanal airtight with a probe. By varying the air pressure in the earcanal the resistance of the eardrum to the pressure can be measured, which allows pressure in the middle ear cavity.

To measure the stapedius reflex the probe products a gradually louder sound until the muscle contraction can be measured on the eardrum which gets more resistance to the probes air pressure.

Subjective tests are test where the patients response is used to record a test result.

Central auditory and some visual and motoric sills are closely related. We are testing 9 different such skills.

  1. Visual Order Threshold - is the minimum time at which you can separate 2 visual stimuli
    • This ability is very important for digesting written information
    • Increase the speed with which the brain is able to digest and process information.
  2. Auditory Order Threshold - is the minimum time at which you can separate 2 auditory stimuli
    • If it takes you too long, you may have difficulty differentiating critical plosives b-d, g-k, or p-t from each other. This results in difficulty with understanding spoken language.
  3. Spatial (Directional) Hearing - Is the minimum time difference at which you can localize a sound
    • Allows correct training of spatial (directional) hearing.
    • – Very important to be able to perceive sounds and especially language selectively
      • from different directions,
      • to be able to assign them
      • to ignore them as well.
  4. Pitch Discrimination - is the minimum difference between two tones
    • Vital ability for differentiating vowels and decoding of voice melody.
    • Extremely important for speaking as well as for understanding language.
  5. Rhythm - fastest rhythm you can follow
    • Ability to convert perceived auditory stimuli as fast as possible into movements.
    • very important for thinking, speaking and writing
    • To train hemispheric coordination.
  6. Auditory Choice Reaction - separating two different tones and reacting as fast as possible
    • Decisive for identifying time of Phonemes (spoken) and graphemes (reading).
    • To react fast and focused to auditory stimuli without visual aid
  7. Frequency Pattern Recognition - quickly and accurately resolve auditory patterns
    • An important pre-requisite for the segmentation of the continuous stream of auditory stimuli during speech identification and processing.
  8. Duration Pattern Recognition - quickly and accurately resolve auditory patterns
    • An important pre-requisite for the segmentation of the continuous stream of auditory stimuli during speech identification and processing.
  9. Shortterm memory (syllablesis the ability to remember and repeat the typical amount of syllables (age minus one, but no more than six). This skill is important to be able to grasp the meaning of a text swiftly. This capability is measured by repeating items with 2-3-4-5-6 syllables at a rate of four syllables / second.
